Magnetic Search of Disposal Pits At Weapons Facility
Five sites suspected of having burial pits of weapon packaging materials were investigated as the initial phase of a comprehensive remediation action. Measurement grids with tightly controlled tolerances (±0.5 foot) were constructed across the 4 to 12 acre sites. Profiles within the grids were permanently monumented so geophysical anomalies of interest could be relocated and excavated. Two data sets (magnetics and electromagnetics) were systematically collected across the grids and contoured. Data anomalies interpreted as burial areas were interpreted and further characterized with radar profiling. These anomalies were assigned an excavation priority ranking.
